Review by Martin Lee

“Double Squeezes” is a natural and clear ‘sequel’ to Anthony’s first book on this subject, “Simple Squeezes”. It takes the subject of squeezes to a far deeper level than the first book and in my view is an education to bridge players who want to play in a competitive environment. It is for people who already understand the concept of squeezes in play and realise that to become an ‘above-average’ competitive player (either for money or in tournaments), they need to sharpen their skills and understanding of situations at the table which although relatively rare or infrequent, when they do come up, it can make the difference of a ‘top’ or perhaps not winning the rubber when there was an opportunity to do so.

Anthony carries on with the acronym TOWEL which he explains with hand after hand after hand. It is truly absorbing to read the commentaries on the hands when, on first sight or at a glance, the squeeze is not obvious but after thought and methodical counting of the hands, a double (or other) squeeze is apparent and potentially the only way to achieve the contract and the glory that goes with it !!

I do agree with Anthony’s sentiment of pleasure when you do see the squeeze and execute properly – this book can give you the ability to have that pleasure!!

To assist the reader in his/her learning, there are several exercises and practice hands to study. If the reader is stuck, the answers and detailed commentary assist in the education.

It is a book that competitive bridge players will read two, three and multiple times.

I thank Anthony for the opportunity to read it at an early stage.
