¨ Q 7 6 5

§ Q J 8

Board 30 Tuesday 1st October

You arrive at the best contract, 2ª, and need to make two overtricks for a good score.  West finds the best lead (it is double dummy) of ¨8.

Q1       Which card do you play from dummy?

i           ¨A

ii           ¨J, 10 or 3

Q2i      If you played ¨A which card do you play at trick 2?

a          ª4 or ª6 (ªK is clearly wrong)

b          ©3, 4 or 9

c          ¨J, 10 or 3

d          §A K or 9

Q2ii      If you played ¨J, 10 or 3 East wins and returns a diamond.  Which card do you play at trick 3?

α          ª4 or ª6 (ªK is clearly wrong)

β          ©3, 4 or 9

γ          §A K or 9

A diamond is clearly wrong as East ruffs and cashes ©A and ªA

Answer:

b:  Declarer must win ¨A and play a heart – the “scissors” coup.  After that West cannot ever gain the lead to give East a ruff.  Ducking the first diamond is no good – East returns his diamond and cannot be stopped from ruffing a diamond.
